We didn’t have cellphones growing up, but perhaps we had something that worked better. We had had CB radios.
Citizen Band radios weren’t just for truck drivers. We had them in all of our houses and on the tractors so we could call each other as needed.
One of the coolest things about a CB radio was picking out your handle, your CB name, just like you’d pick out a Twitter handle today. My dad was Farmboy, and this was way before The Princess Bride. My uncle went by Big Red.
At the time the song Rhinestone Cowboy was very popular, and so I took Rhinestone as my handle. So, there was sadness, as well as fond memories that came upon me with the passing of Glen Campbell this week.
“How about ya, Rhinestone! Got your ears on? We’ll miss ya.”
Always had a soft spot in my heart for Glen Campbell. I recall one great line from a movie whose title I forget — he’s playing his guitar while this gal is taking a bubble bath. She asks, “Does that thing play underwater?”. He answers, “No, ma’am, but I do.”
